After relocating from Atlanta to Martinsburg to be closer to family, my 86-year-old mother and I made the intentional decision to seek medical care within the WVU hospital system, specifically choosing Apple Valley Family Medicine under the care of Dr. Ngozi Ude-Oshiyoye and Dr. Kolawale Oshiyoye. As African American physicians, we hoped they would bring a level of cultural awareness and empathy to their care. What we experienced instead was systemic disorganization, lack of responsiveness, and what I can only describe as clinical negligence.nnOur first appointment was in January, where Dr. Ude-Oshiyoye conducted a brief exam and stated that referrals would be written for specialists. Weeks passed, and after repeated calls to those specialists, I discovered none had received referrals. I called Apple Valleyu2019s office weeklyu2014every Tuesdayu2014only to be routed to a voicemail that was never returned. Eventually, I drove to the office and was assured the referrals would be faxed that day. Still, nothing happened.nnThis pattern continued for monthsu2014promises made, no follow-through, and a complete disregard for continuity of care. I finally scheduled my mother's Medicare annual wellness visit solely to speak to the doctor again about the long-overdue referrals. Once again, I was told they would be sent u201cthat day.u201d They were not.nnBut the most egregious failure occurred during that very appointment. The morning of her visit, my mother fell flat on her back. She was visibly limping and in clear pain when we arrived. Despite this, Dr. Ude never physically examined her. No check for bruises, no checking her gait, no looking at her injuriesu2014just questions and a prescription for a pain patch. We thought she stepped out to return, but instead, she had already moved on to the next patient.nnWhen we got home, I discovered extensive bruising and a bloody toeu2014injuries any competent physician would have noted with the bare minimum of care. In the end, Dr. Google and I gave her better medical attention than Dr. Ude did.nnThe lack of follow-up, poor communication, and alarming indifference toward a vulnerable senior patient is both unprofessional and unethical. My motheru2014and any patientu2014deserves better. We will absolutely be seeking care elsewhere. I urge anyone considering this practice to proceed with caution.

My family and I appreciate the friendly and helpful employees of Apple Valley. They all make us feel welcomed in their clinic. MAR is one of the employees that I would say is especially kind and very professional in her role. We like seeing her at the clinic whenever we have appointments as she is very welcoming all the time!
