Be prepared for this doctor called Scott Wasserstrom. He will call you on Sunday and yelled at you on the phone because you asked three questions on MyChart for your blood test results. He will ask you to go to find another doctor. He should answer our question because we pay our bill and we are not an expert on the medicine. He seems just want to easy money. Unfortunately, it doesnu2019t exist on the world. If he feels overwhelmed, he should quit medicine and go to find another job. Based on his behavior, I think his license should be suspended.

I met with a PCP for the first time for a physical (just moved to the area) and was found the experience to be average. First, the doctor did not complete a full physical. Second, the nurse measured my blood pressure which was oddly quite high and the doctor did not follow up on the red flag. He was appropriately social, but had limited knowledge on various things. There was one issue that I raised and he suggested that I speak with a specialist within the practice. What I've told you so far is as good as it gets for this practice, in my experience (and the only reason I gave it two stars which I believe to be generous).nnThe same day I setup an appointment with the specialist within the same practice. I was warned by the receptionist to check with the specialist's individual receptionist (that's another thing, there is a central admin but this person seemed to be fairly useless in my experience) to make sure that the specialist takes my insurance. I found this odd as it was the same practice, but called the specialist's office. The receptionist said they had no idea if they accepted my insurance and suggested I call my insurance company. I found this to be pretty ridiculous, but did it anyways.nnNext, a few days before my appointment with the specialist I was requested to change my appointment day and time because the doctor was no longer going to be in at that time (an insufficient reason). The receptionist asked me to move my appointment up which was fine, but I had to block out time in my calendar (as I did for the original appointment). The day of the appointment I was called and told that the doctor was ill and had to cancel my appointment. For those of you keeping count, those are two appointments that I blocked out time for and which were canceled. I was then informed that the doctor had no openings for the next 3 weeks - after waiting 2.5 weeks for my original appointment. This has been the worst experience I have ever had at a primary care practice. You would expect better from a practice connected to Washington University. Instead they fall far below expectation.

Maryland Medical seems to be working loophools in insurance to bill twice for a single visit. My annual physical, which is covered at 100% by my insurance, cost me $50. While $50 isn't a huge chunk of money, it's unethical that the doctor sends in two charges for the visit - one for the physical and one for an extra office visit. The justification they gave me was that I raised questions about other/new health concerns. What is the purpose of the annual physical if it's not to discuss changes in your health year over year? Probably best to look for a new doctor that isn't watching their clock and counting questions for billing insurance. Another example of a broken system.

Be prepared for last minute cancellations that they won't tell you about until you're in the office, surprise bills ($150 just to check your blood pressure), and poor customer service. Oh, and if you ask for itemized bills they will ignore/refuse you.

Dr. Shuman is great but over the years his secretary has consistently been THE single most rude, unaccomodating and non-user-friendly I've encountered in a physician's office, period. It was so bad I had to give up on this physician and find a new internist. It's a shame, because Dr. Shuman really was thorough, friendly, and effective. But my time is valuable too, and I have choices in healthcare just like anyone else, facts that seem to elude his secretary, who has serious attitude problems. Sorry Doc, call me when you have a staffing change!
